Centrifugal fans are machines that use input mechanical energy to increase gas pressure and discharge gas, serving as machines that connect fluids. Centrifugal fans are widely used in factories, mines, tunnels, cooling towers, vehicles, ships, and buildings for ventilation, dust removal, and cooling. They are used for ventilation and air intake in boilers and industrial furnaces; cooling and ventilation in air conditioning and household appliances; grain drying; and in wind tunnels, wind sources, and the expansion and propulsion of hovercraft.

Centrifugal fan

Centrifugal fans operate based on the principle of converting kinetic energy into potential energy, using a high-speed rotating impeller to accelerate the gas, then slowing it down, changing the flow rate, and converting kinetic energy into potential energy (pressure). In a single-stage centrifugal fan, gas enters the impeller from the shaft and enters the diffuser radially as it passes through the impeller. The gas in the diffuser changes direction, the cross-sectional area of the duct increases, and the airflow slows down, converting kinetic energy into pressure energy. The pressure increase mainly occurs in the impeller, followed by the expansion process. Delivering airflow from a multi-stage centrifugal fan to the recirculator into the next impeller generates higher pressure.

Centrifugal fanThe working principle is fundamentally the same as that of a turbo compressor. Both have low gas flow rates and minimal pressure changes, so generally, there is no need to handle changes in gas specific volume. In other words, the gas is treated as an incompressible fluid. They can be divided into two types: right-hand and left-hand. When the motor side rotates clockwise, the impeller is called a right-handed fan. When the impeller rotates counterclockwise, it is called a left-handed fan.

The centrifugal fan consists of a casing, main shaft, impeller, bearing drive mechanism, and motor.

  1. Casing: Made of steel plate, sturdy and reliable, available in whole, semi-open, and easy to maintain designs.

  2. Impeller: Composed of blades, curved front plate, and rear plate.

  3. Rotor: Must maintain static balance to ensure smooth rotation and good performance.

  4. Electric part: Composed of main shaft, bearing box, rolling bearings, and pulleys (or couplings).

Centrifugal fans are essentially variable flow static pressure devices. When the speed is constant, the pressure-flow theoretical curve of the centrifugal fan must be linear. Due to internal losses, the actual characteristic curve is curved. The pressure generated by the centrifugal fan is greatly affected by changes in intake temperature or density. For a specified supply airflow, the pressure generated at a higher inflow temperature (lower air density) is lower.

With the advancement of industrialization in our country, there is a strong push for energy conservation and reduced consumption, along with industrial upgrades and comprehensive restructuring, necessitating a large-scale update of industrial infrastructure. As an important auxiliary equipment in industry, centrifugal fans will be increasingly applied in power, cement, petrochemical, and coal mining environments. In the new economic development situation, the editor believes that the future of theCentrifugal fanindustry will continue to maintain rapid growth, providing better support for industry.
